This development board based on the ESP32 MCU is the perfect solution for those who want to control up to 18 servomotors. Thanks to the integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth communication module, it is possible to remotely control the system with maximum flexibility.

Power is supplied by a 7.4V Lithium battery (sold separately). To ensure stable operation, the board is equipped with two integrated voltage regulators that provide a constant 5V output, regardless of the battery's charge level. Additionally, there is an On/Off toggle switch, making it easy to turn the board on and off quickly.

The board includes six RGB LEDs with Neopixel technology (WS2812). These LEDs, with four pins (two for power and two for cascading connection), can be easily controlled with a single digital line, allowing you to control the on/off state and the color of each individual LED. They are perfect for creating customizable light effects.

Moreover, the board is equipped with three programmable buttons, which can be configured to execute specific functions, adding an additional level of interactivity to the project.

The heart of the HEXAPOD robot

Presented in issue no. 283 (February/March) of Elettronica In, this hexapod robot, inspired by the movements of spiders,
boasts 18 degrees of freedom and Bluetooth control. Based on this development board, it is available for purchase on our website!

The development environment

 

  • Firmware development can be carried out using the Arduino IDE. To set up the development environment, you need to install the ESP32 package by following these steps:
  • Open the Arduino IDE and go to Settings.
  • In the "Additional Boards Manager URLs" section, enter the following link: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/espressif/arduino-esp32/gh-pages/package_esp32_index.json
  • Restart the IDE and, through the Boards Manager, install the Arduino ESP32 Board package.
  • You can write custom code based on your needs. However, for a more practical approach to the board's features, we have made several test sketches available, the same ones used for the HEXAPOD robot:

  • TEST_ADC
  • The SPIDERBOT sketch combines all the test functionalities and implements the coordinated movement of the HEXAPOD robot.

Wireless control

This development board integrates an ESP32 Bluetooth module, allowing for easy control from an Android smartphone or PC. The setup is straightforward: with just two lines of code, you can activate it and assign a name to the device. Data management is handled through a virtual serial port, simplifying software development.

To control the system, simply install the free Bluetooth Electronics app from the Play Store. The app allows you to create a custom dashboard to send and receive commands intuitively.
